Sip, Sip, Hooray
Tequila Escape serves more than tequila. But let’s talk about tequila. Angel Pena-Fernandez and Steve Kakavelis purchased 439 Kitchen + Bar this spring and spent the first month transforming it into this Latin-fusion eatery, featuring a menu stocked with fresh, natural, and often organic ingredients. And a top-shelf cocktail program. Says Pena-Fernandez, “We have about 100 different tequilas. We have rare bourbons, scotch, and more.” From this, Pena-Fernandez has crafted a superb drink menu – from the sweet and flavorful to the simple and neat. “People travel to get our specially crafted drinks,” he says.
Of course, man cannot live by drink alone. Some of the superb starters include ahi tuna tostada, Peruvian artichokes, octopus tacos, blistered shishito peppers, and shaved Brussels sprouts. There is a solid offering of simple, delicious salads: quinoa, beet and goat cheese, kale and boursin, and others. For the main event, there are diver scallops, grass-fed skirt steak, fish tacos, vegetarian risotto, and lobster enchilada.
Food and drink make places stand out. But the vibe provides the secret sauce. Step in many a night of the week and catch that vibe. It’s there.
