Soil My Undies – use this gardening trick
“Eeeww! Soil a pair of men’s underwear?” Some of Bedford’s Rusticus Garden Club members recoiled in disgust at the suggestion by Karen Simons, their co-chair of conservation. The “Soil My Undies” initiative to bury men’s underwear is one way for gardeners to see if their soil contains the beneficial micro-organisms that decompose organic material and add nutrients to the soil, all of which is essential for vital and nutritious plants. When they dug it up two months later, if all that remained was the elastic, then it was a (green) thumbs up for their soil. If the undies were still intact, then that was evidence of lifeless dirt, and they’d have to do a soil test and amend it. Some winners, some losers!
