Editor’s Pick–Jay Street Cafe–Katonah
Although the “Damn Good Benny” at the Jay Street Cafe is not necessarily named for the King of Swing, the late Pound Ridger Benny Goodman would likely approve. Katonah has been called “Mayberry” for its quaint small town feel, where you can walk from the train to “mom and pop” stores. Christina and Matt Safarowic, owners of Katonah’s The Whitlock, took on the task of creating a “breakfast menu” meeting spot with that hometown feel. Christina is proud of their customer relationships, as hospitality is at the forefront of what this dynamic husband-wife duo are all about.
Chef-owner Matt specializes in food that is always familiar, but with a twist. Look for menu items such as the egg tostada—crisp corn tortillas with cheesy scrambled eggs and fresh salsa. Order from the griddle for the best sour cream pancakes around. Admirably, all bread and pastries are baked on premises. Request seasonal jam for your toast and be pleasantly surprised that it too is crafted in-house.
At JSC you can have breakfast for dinner and enjoy a boozy milkshake, too! This is sure to become your “feel good, go-to” spot!
