Bedford Says Yes!
Bedford is buzzing with the promise of a new Playhouse
Bedford is buzzing this spring with the promise of a new Bedford Playhouse. After a three-month campaign, the Friends of Bedford Playhouse reached its pledge goal and began planning renovations and equipment upgrades, saving the Playhouse from becoming retail space. Over 800 supporters raised their hands and pledged $2.5 million before the landlord’s imposed deadline. The group’s goal is to reopen the Playhouse in the first quarter of 2016 as a member-supported, non-profit organization.
The next step is to negotiate a long-term lease, with an option to buy, with building owner Alchemy Properties. The vision is to return the theater to its original grandeur, featuring a large screen and seating 280 people. Many longtime Bedford residents fondly remember the original Playhouse before it was divided in two in 1983. A smaller theater, seating 88, and a café are also planned.
Friends founder John Farr, a renowned film curator, helped re-launch the Avon Theatre in Stamford. His group’s mission is to offer quality films. whether mainstream, foreign, or independent, and to provide a community meeting place and venue for special events and educational programs.
